Introduction
As retailers increasingly rely on real-time data to improve store operations and inventory accuracy, AI-powered automation has become essential for driving efficiency at scale. Simbe’s Tally, an autonomous shelf-scanning robot within the Store Intelligence™ platform, continuously navigates store aisles to capture and analyze shelf-level data, helping retailers improve product availability, pricing accuracy, and store execution. As deployments expanded across thousands of stores worldwide, Simbe required a more powerful and reliable edge computing platform to support real-time sensor processing, autonomous navigation, and advanced AI workloads. To meet these growing demands, Simbe adopted the ASRock Industrial NUC-255H, providing the performance, reliability, and scalability needed to power the next generation of Tally.

Challange
Prior to adopting ASRock Industrial's NUC-255H platform, Simbe utilized a consumer-grade computing solution that was not specifically designed for continuous operation in demanding retail environments. As Tally's AI, autonomy, and navigation capabilities evolved, several limitations emerged:
Supporting next-generation AI capabilities required a purpose-built industrial computing platform capable of delivering higher performance, greater reliability, and long-term operational stability.

Solution
Simbe implemented ASRock Industrial’s NUC-255H motherboard as the central computing platform for Tally 3.5–4.0, providing the processing power required to support autonomous retail operations. Acting as the system’s primary compute engine, the NUC-255H performs real-time sensor fusion, enabling Tally to continuously analyze data from multiple onboard sensors and maintain accurate awareness of its position and surroundings. The platform also supports autonomous navigation and localization, edge AI processing, environmental perception, and real-time decision-making, while coordinating communication across various sensors and subsystems. Together, these capabilities allow Tally to operate reliably and efficiently in dynamic retail environments while providing a scalable foundation for future AI and automation enhancements.
Why ASRock Industrial NUC-255H
Simbe selected ASRock Industrial’s NUC-255H as the compute platform for Tally due to its ability to meet the demanding requirements of autonomous retail operations. The industrial-grade design provides enhanced reliability and support for higher operating temperatures, ensuring stable performance during continuous deployment in dynamic store environments. Powered by the latest Intel platform with an integrated NPU, the NUC-255H delivers the processing capability needed for real-time sensor fusion, autonomous navigation, and edge AI workloads while maintaining power efficiency. Its expanded I/O connectivity also enables seamless integration with Tally’s diverse sensor suite, supporting accurate environmental perception and navigation. In addition, the close collaboration between Simbe and ASRock Industrial engineering teams allowed for the development of a customized, production-ready solution, including BIOS optimization, security enhancements, and deployment-specific configurations tailored to Tally’s operational requirements.
To further optimize system deployment and operational consistency, Simbe and ASRock Industrial engineering teams collaborated closely to develop a customized BIOS solution tailored to Tally’s requirements. The custom BIOS enables secure boot using Simbe’s signing key to help protect customer data and ensure system integrity, while incorporating preconfigured manufacturing settings that streamline production and reduce deployment complexity. It also supports a branded boot experience that aligns with Simbe’s product identity and helps maintain a consistent user experience. Together, these enhancements improve deployment efficiency, simplify fleet management, and ensure greater consistency across large-scale installations.
Why This Matters
A more capable and reliable edge computing platform enables Tally to operate consistently in complex retail environments while supporting continuous innovation in AI and autonomy. For retailers, this means more accurate store data, improved shelf execution, and better operational visibility. For Simbe, the NUC-255H provides a scalable foundation for expanding Tally's capabilities and accelerating the future of autonomous retail intelligence.
